Cane Cutters Monuments
In the township of Home Hill, two monuments celebrate the history of the Australian sugarcane industry to the Burdekin. On the Bruce Highway, near the Burdekin Diorama, stands a wooden carving of a hand cane cutter. This piece was created by artist Matty George using a chainsaw during the 2021 Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival. You can admire the level of detail from the Burdekin River carved to flow between the cutters feet to the cane trash darkening his legs.
Additionally, at the Home Hill Showgrounds, there are two hand cane cutter sculptures that highlight the multicultural history of the sugarcane industry in the Burdekin. Completed in May 2016, they were designed, constructed and painted by indigenous artists from the local Gudjuda Reference Group, under the mentorship of Dr. Farvardin Daliri OAM. Each sculpture stands 3.5m tall, weighs 20 tonnes and is made from steel and cement.
