  • Ayr Backpackers is a working backpacker hostel that supports 417 and 462 Visa Holders needing to complete their 88 days farm work in the Burdekin region. Enjoy your stay with a typical Australian family who genuinely care about backpackers. Ayr Backpackers boasts a range of facilities including: 2 Queenslander style hostels, rooms ranging from 4-10 persons per room, Wi-Fi, 5 full kitchens, 5 dining areas, 6 bathrooms, 2 swimming pools and several recreational activities.

  • The Ayr Nature Display is Australia's finest, preserved collection of butterflies, moths, beetles, crustaceans, sea shells, reptiles, rocks, timber, aboriginal stone implements and fossils, especially ammonites, all under one roof.

    The Ayr Nature Display was conceived and arranged by Jess and Allan Ey. The display was opened to the public in 1966. The experience begins as you walk past feature walls decorated with North Queensland rocks at the front and the entrance of the display. 9,400 slabs cut with a lapidary saw were used. After traversing the entrance, you will walk into an exceptional display of thousands of specimens housed amazingly in a 4.9-metre by 28.4-metre room.

  • Groper Creek Caravan Park is North Queensland's best kept secret and our piece of paradise. Just 14 kilometres off the Bruce Highway from Home Hill, you’ll discover the hidden gem of Groper Creek. The park features 50 sites for tents and caravans, complete with power and water supply. Choose to stay near the water or under the shade of native trees. The park boasts clean facilities, a dump point, and reasonable prices. Additionally, they offer two air-conditioned units at the Home Hill Boat Club for rent. From here, you can easily access the Groper Creek Jetty and two boat ramps, perfect for fishing or crabbing in the Burdekin River, estuaries, or reef.

  • Alva Beach Tourist Park is tucked away in the small coastal village of Alva, just 15km from Ayr. Located a few hundred metres behind the sand dunes of Lynch's Beach, the park spans 5 acres of tropical grounds, offering both camping sites and cabin accommodation. Guests can choose from powered and non-powered sites, with or without slabs. The park also features a variety of cabins, including en-suite cabins that can accommodate up to six people and budget cabins suitable for up to four people.

  • Giovannas Cucina offers traditional Italian/Sicilian meals - ready to take home and heat! The hard work has been taken out, but the love put in! Enjoy a diverse menu featuring traditional pasta dishes, wood-fired pizzas, and delectable desserts, all crafted from fresh ingredients. Inside you will find imported and local Aussie products available for purchase. Giovannas Cucina brings the flavors of Italy and Sicily to the heart of Home Hill.

  • The Burdekin Machinery Preservationists are a dedicated group of volunteers passionate about preserving the rich agricultural heritage of our region. The group maintain and restore vintage machinery, stationary engines, tractors and cars to working condition. The most significant item on display is the 1911 Marshall Colonial tractor, which is the only one of its kind remaining in Australia.

    Located in the Brandon Heritage Precinct, the precinct is also home to the John Tait Steam Gallery, the Alf Shand Blacksmith Shop, the Fielding Engine Shed and the Old Brandon Church. Explore the Burdekin Machinery Preservationists with a guided tour on Mondays from 8am to 3pm (except December) and on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm (May to September).

  • Burdekin Farm Stay is a working sugarcane farm located in the Burdekin region. Visitors have the opportunity to witness cane harvesting, hauling and the burning of cane paddocks - a unique experience that attracts people from around the world.

    Burdekin Farm Stay is the perfect spot to relax by the river, under the shade of the mango trees, and witness some truly unique Australian experiences. Visitors can also enjoy some fine fishing, bird watching and photography, with many species native to the area. There is also a bonfire area with a BBQ camp oven pit that can be lit any night, if requested.

  • Explore the spectacular Burdekin region with a stay at Discovery Parks - Ayr, featuring stunning gardens full of hibiscus and you might even be lucky enough to be able to pick a mango from the trees in the park!   • The Iron Works Brewery started pouring beers in their bar at the historic foundry of the Delta Iron Works in March 2023. The brewery has a total of 8 beers on tap that have been all brewed on site as well as a selection of wines and spirits along with pizza.

  • Farmhouse Cafe are a small, family owned and operated cafe situated in the Coles Burdekin Plaza, Ayr. They offer home-style breakfast and lunch meals with a Mediterranean twist, delicious coffee locally sourced, and have something for everyone!

  • Tucked away just off Home Hill's main street, this bakery is a local treasure! Indulge in a variety of freshly baked bread, pastries, pies, sweets, cakes, and sandwiches. You'll also find an array of hot and cold beverages to complement your treats. The bakery is open from 5:30am to 2:00pm on weekdays and closes a bit earlier on weekends, at 1:00pm.
